The theme of this exhibition, "Funny Art," derives from the artist's symbolic figures—images of the capital letter "Q"—and the whimsical, playful, and game-like qualities they convey. Hu Hua's art, through its childlike, playful, mischievous, and cute "meaningful symbols," communicates a serious and rational contemplation. The black, white, and gray tones reflect a detached, distant amusement with the masses, a curious exploration of the self, real life, and the universe. The works reflect the unprecedented busyness, toil, stress, struggle, and fantasy of contemporary people, contemplating the harmonious relationship between the vast macrocosm and the tiny microcosm. Poetically and playfully, they interpret the existential state of modern individuals.
With rapid economic development, a surge in consumer culture, the widespread use of electronic networks, and the advancement of modern media, leisure cultural activities have expanded. People's lives are also engaged in intense professional activities, and interpersonal relationships are increasingly characterized by isolation and distance. The pressures of survival, confusion, escapism, and individual loneliness, insignificance, and introversion coexist. The playful nature of contemporary society increasingly fosters a lifestyle and attitude of living in or through games. Artistic creation and taste seem to merge everything into a superficial game, playful and relaxed visual characteristic. In Hu Hua's art, he explores themes of the self, humanity, and the universe through the simplicity and cuteness of his expressive language and the black humor of his approach.
